ABSTRACT

PurposeThis study is aimed at developing an understanding of the consequences of the pandemic on families' socioeconomic resilience, and the strategies adopted by the families in overcoming social vulnerabilities amid uncertainty.Design/methodology/approachThe materials for this study consist of semi-structured interviews with 21 families spread across the South Sumatra Province, Indonesia. Families in the study represent four different income levels, namely very high, high, middle and low, and who also work in the informal sector. Each family has at least 1 or more members who fall into the vulnerable category (children, the elderly, people with disabilities unemployed or having potential economic vulnerability).FindingsTwo main findings are outlined. Regardless of their socioeconomic status, many of the families analyzed adopted similar strategies to remain resilient. Among the strategies are classifying the urgency of purchasing consumer goods based on financial capacity rather than needs, leveraging digital economic opportunities as alternative sources of income, utilizing more extensive informal networks and going into debt. Another interesting finding shows that the pandemic, to some extent, has saved poor families from social insecurity. This is supported by evidence showing that social distancing measures during the pandemic have reduced the intensity of sociocultural activities, which require invited community members to contribute financially. The reduction of sociocultural activities in the community has provided more potential savings for the poor.Research limitations/implicationsIn this study, informants who provided information about their family conditions represent a major segment of the workforce and tend to be technologically savvy and younger, due to the use of Zoom as a platform for conducting interviews. Therefore, there may be a bias in the results. Another limitation is that since the interviewees were recommended by our social network in the fields, there is a risk of a distorted selection of participants.Originality/valueThis study offers insights that are critical in helping to analyze family patterns in developing countries in mitigating the risks and uncertainties caused by COVID-19. In addition, the literature on social policy and development could benefit from further research on COVID-19 as an alternative driver to identify mechanisms that could bring about change that would result in "security.” Critical questions and limitations of this study are presented at the end of the paper to be responded to as future research agenda.

ABSTRACT

Gambier production in Indonesia comes from smallholder plantations. West Sumatra Province is the leading producer of gambier, with a supply of around 80-90 per cent of the total national gambier production. Based on empirical data, when the selling price of gambier exports increases or fluctuates, the selling price of gambier farmers does not increase as much as the price increase at the level of exporter traders. This condition creates marketing inefficiency. The monopoly index (MPI) is one way to measure marketing efficiency based on the performance of each marketing agency. In this regard, the current business environment is also affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. This study analyzed the monopoly level on the Gambier marketing channel in West Sumatra during the covid 19 pandemic. A survey was conducted in this study. The type of data used in this research is cross-section data. Respondents in this study were gambier farmers, gambier traders, and gambier exporters in Padang City, Lima Puluh Kota, and Pesisir Selatan Regency. The analytical method used in this study is using the Lerner index. Based on the analysis of the monopoly index, it is known that exporters have an enormous monopoly index value compared to other marketing institutions, where the collecting trader has a monopoly index of 4.84, inter-regional traders have 2.09, and exporters have 12.81 MDI. These values showed that exporters dominate gambier marketing in West Sumatra Province. The strong position of exporters in determining prices and marketing gambier is also influenced by cooperation with inter-regional traders (IRT).

ABSTRACT

The focus of this research is to identify the dynamics of regional economic development through digital trends towards tourist visits and the promotion of tourist destinations in the Lake Toba area during the F1 Powerboat World Championship (F1H2O) event on Lake Toba, North Sumatra, Indonesia. Through the conduct of online research methods (ORMs) in diagnosing digital social issues and trends regarding the events, the results show that there was an effort to maximize the increase in regional economic development, by utilizing the potential and attractiveness of holding the F1 Powerboat as part of sports tourism. As an event aims to spur the movement of domestic tourists to super-priority destination areas, the implementation of the F1 Powerboat event is not only a driving force in the recovery and improvement of the local economy after the COVID-19 Pandemic, but also a venue for the promotion of other tourist destinations in North Sumatra. However, the positive impacts of this event organization on sustainable economic growth in the surrounding areas is not without reservations. The event has received some negative feedback, which include the problems of event preparation and implementation, and also the limited awareness of local community tourism. This research suggests that in order to achieve sustainable regional development and urban resilience, the future organization of sport tourism events should not only focus on the economic objectives, but also on the other aspects including socio-cultural and environmental perspectives. © 2023 by the authors.

ABSTRACT

The role of MSMEs is very large for Indonesia's economic growth, where the contribution of MSMEs to the gross domestic product (GDP) reaches 60.5% and to employment of 96.9% of the total national employment absorption. However, during the Covid-19 pandemic, the government imposed a semi-lockdown by limiting business operating hours, by limiting 50% of the capacity of arriving consumers and reducing operating hours to only 20.00 at night. This policy resulted in a decrease in product demand by 84.8%. However, the MSMEs coffee shop only had an impact of 16%. Based on this condition, researchers are interested in conducting research on MSMEs, especially coffee shops during a pandemic. The purpose of this study to analyze the Market Orientation effect of Product Innovation on Marketing Performance and to analyze the role of Product Innovation in mediating the influence of Market Orientation on Coffee Shop Marketing Performance in Medan City. The survey was conducted on 143 coffee shop entrepreneurs who still survived from the COVID-19 pandemic in the city of Medan. Data collection was carried out using a questionnaire with direct interview with the coffee shop owner. Data Analysis using the Partial Least Squares (PLS) analysis technique. ABSTRACT

Sumatra Island is the third largest island with the second largest population in Indonesia which has the following eight provinces: Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Riau, Jambi, South Sumatra, Bengkulu and Lampung. The connectivity of these eight provinces in the economic field is very strong. This encourages high mobility between these provinces. During this Covid-19 pandemic, the high mobility between provinces affects the level of spread of Covid-19 on the island of Sumatra. The central government ordered local governments to implement a community activity restriction program called PPKM. In this article, a study is conducted on the impact of the PKKM program on the spread of Covid 19 on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. The spread of Covid-19 is modeled using the Susceptible-Infected-Recovered-Death (SIRD) model which considers the mobility factor of the population. The model parameters were estimated using Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC). The results of the study using this model show that the application of PKKM in several provinces in Sumatra can reduce the level of spread of COVID-19. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic is causing significant global changes, and one of the most affected sectors is the tourism industry. Therefore, this study aimed at determining the impacts of the pandemic on tourism by comparing the spatial economic classification before and during the pandemic using four analyses, namely the regional Klassen Typology, sector approach, the Location Quotient (LQ), and Shift-Share Analysis. The processed information is secondary data from the Central Statistical Agency of Karo Regency and North Sumatra Province, Indonesia. This area is one of the mainstay areas of the national economy and part of the Lake Toba Super Priority Destination. The obtained results showed that the tourism sector was classified among the fast-growing and uncompetitive sectors before the pandemic. However, during the crisis, it became a slow-growing and competitive sector. © 2022 WITPress. All rights reserved.

ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the right of citizens to access health information in a language with which they are most comfortable. It asks to what extent this right is enjoyed by the population of multilingual Indonesia. As in many other parts of the world, health protocols have frequently not been adhered to during the COVID-19 pandemic and, as a result, bringing the disease under control has not been easy. We present findings from a study which examines the COVID-related language appearing in local government health department websites. The chapter also looks briefly at a central government programme which provides COVID information in multiple languages. In general, it is found that health information is rarely communicated in languages which are likely to be readily understood. While exhortations to adopt certain behaviours abound, no explanations about why these behaviours are necessary are provided. Finally, two grassroots initiatives to make COVID information more accessible are described. © 2023 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. All rights reserved.

ABSTRACT

Background of the problem: The World Health Organization (WHO) officially declared the COVID-19 corona virus as a pandemic in March 2020. The growth of Covid-19 cases in Indonesia is included as the fastest growth. On March 26th 2020, the number of cases has reached 893 cases with a cure rate of 4% and a mortality rate of 9%. The spread of the virus happens through the liquid droplets spread by someone positive for Covid-19. Prevention of pandemic transmission that can be done by us is by staying at home, using masks when leaving the house and washing hands frequently, this is one of the public's preparations, which must be done to reduce the cases of Covid-19 pandemic. The phenomenon that happens in a community is there are still many people who ignores the protocols such as staying at home, using masks when leaving the house, of course this will make the cases of Covid 19 hardly stop the transmission of Covid-19, so preparation is very important against the Covid 19's outbreak, with this preparation hopefully, the community will have the same concern in facing the Covid 19's outbreak together. Methodology: using descriptive research design with survey method. The population is all the households in Lampung Province, which amounted to 2,141.110 households, so the sample needed is 1,500 households spread over 15 districts/cities determined by cluster random sampling technique. To collect the data a modified questionnaire is used from the framework of individual and household preparation in anticipating natural disasters from LIPI-UNESCO/ISDR. The Results: The Lampung community's preparation index in dealing with the Covid-19 outbreak is mostly in the high category or very ready at 41.6%, the medium or ready category at 37.6% and the low or unprepared category at 20.8%. This high category index has not been followed by all high elements or components, there are still elements of the availability of preparation plans to deal with the Covid 19 outbreak and preparation in mobilizing resources when the COVID-19 outbreak happens. Mostly they are still in the medium and low categories.
